The ICC Men’s T20 World Cricket World Cup gets underway in Australia on October 16th and winds up with the championship match on November13th following the semi-finals on November 9th and 10th.
The hosts are the defending champions as they defeated New Zealand by eight wickets in the 2021 tournament in Oman and the United Arab Emirates. Australia’s David Warner was named player of the tournament last year with his teammate Mitchell Marsh being named man of the match in the final.
The 16-nation event kicks off with Namibia facing Sri Lanka followed by the Netherlands vs the United Arab Emirates. There will be a total of 42 group matches before the semifinals and final take place for 45 games in total.
The T20 tournament sees the teams split into two different sections. The first round of play features two groups of four competing in a round-robin format with the top two nations in each group advancing to the next round of action, which is known as the Super 12, and gets underway on October 22nd when Australia meets New Zealand and England faces Afghanistan.
Group A of the preliminary round consists of Namibia, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates with Group B containing Ireland, Scotland, the West Indies and Zimbabwe .
The top-ranked teams have automatically qualified for the Super 12 section and have been split into two groups of six with the top two nations in each group advancing the the semifinals following the round-robin play.
Group 1 of the Super 12 consists of Afghanistan, Australia, England and New Zealand and will also contain the Group A first-round winner and the Group B first-round runner up.
Group 2 is made up of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and South Africa and will also contain the Group B first-round winner and the Group A first-round runners-up.
If two or more teams are tied on points in the preliminary group stage or the Super 12 round the tie will be broken by the team with the highest number of wins. If they’re still level it will then be decided by the team with the higher net run rate. If that is also equal the next tiebreaker will be the team with the lower bowling strike rate. And finally if they’re still equal, the decider will be the result of the head-to-head meetings between the teams.
If a game ends in a tie, a Super Over will be played to decide a winner. If the match is still level, one or more super overs will be played until a winner can be declared.
This is the eighth edition of the tournament with the last event being held in 2021 as it was delayed due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
The first T20 World Cup in 2007 was captured by India with Pakistan claiming victory in 2009, England in 2010, the West Indies in 2012, Sri Lanka in 2014, the West Indies again in 2016 and Australia in 2021.
