Who knew? Not Vegas. And that’s damn rare — especially when you consider this sports betting action took place in their own backyard.
Even the sharpest hockey puckheads didn’t see the expansion Vegas Golden Knights doing anything special this year, but the team of castoffs and misfits just reached the Stanley Cup Finals in their inaugural NHL season.
All this despite 500-1 odds. A Golden Knights’ win would see single payouts ranging from $50,000 to $120,000 at several Vegas sportsbooks. Most estimates say the Vegas sportsbooks are on the hook for millions.

Do you Hedge?
Bettors may want to hedge their wagers heading into the final to ensure a payout.
With Tampa Bay up 3-2 on Washington in the Eastern Conference Final, the latest bet365 odds on May 21 had the Golden Knights 21/20 to go all the way with Tampa 11/10 and Washington 17/2.* A Golden Knights’ win would see single payouts ranging from $50,000 to $120,000 at several Vegas sportsbooks.

How did we get here?
The Golden Knights just eliminated the Winnipeg Jets in five games in the Western Conference Finals and await the winner of the Tampa Bay Lightning vs Washington Capitals series. The team of Vegas castoffs was assembled by GM George McPhee through an expansion draft last June when the other 30 NHL clubs left certain players unprotected. The Knights shocked everybody, sportsbooks included, by posting the league’s fifth-best record this season with 109 points.
But while the team’s fans are pulling for a Vegas’ miracle, bookmakers are nervous since thousands of Golden Knights’ fans actually backed the club to win the Cup before the season faced off.
